Sustainable Farming Practices Show Promising Results

Field trials demonstrate significant improvements in soil health and crop yields using eco-friendly farming methods.

A five-year study conducted by WAAS researchers in partnership with farming communities across six provinces has demonstrated that sustainable farming practices can significantly improve both soil health and crop yields while reducing environmental impact.

The study, which involved over 1,000 smallholder farms, compared conventional farming methods with integrated sustainable practices including cover cropping, reduced tillage, integrated pest management, and organic fertilizer application.

Results showed that farms adopting sustainable practices experienced an average 25% increase in crop yields, 30% improvement in soil organic matter, and 40% reduction in synthetic pesticide use compared to conventional farms.

'These findings provide strong evidence that sustainable agriculture is not just environmentally beneficial—it's also economically advantageous for farmers,' said Dr. Emma Okonkwo, lead author of the study.

The research team is now working with agricultural extension services to develop training programs that will help more farmers adopt these proven practices. Pilot programs are already underway in three additional provinces.
